Background: Eight-year-old Rajeswari had never attended school before joining Diya Ghar. Her parents work as sanitation workers to support their family. Due to financial constraints and limited access to education, Rajeswari missed out on early schooling while her siblings continued their education in their native village.
Challenge: When Rajeswari enrolled at Gundemedu centre of Diya Ghar in Jan 2026, she had no foundational literacy or numeracy skills and was unfamiliar with classroom routines. With no prior exposure to Tamil and English, she needed intensive support to become school-ready.
Intervention: Diya Ghar’s teachers created a personalized learning plan using Montessori materials, phonics, storytelling, songs, and hands-on activities. Through consistent support at Diya Ghar, she has learned phonics, alphabets, numbers, colours, rhymes, and basic addition. She can also identify animals, birds, and vegetables confidently.
Although Tamil and English are not her native languages,She has learned to read two letter words in English and she knows Uyir ezhuthu and mei ezhuthukal in Tamil, in Math she knows 1-200, ascending and descending, greater than less than, number names and addition subtraction.She has adapted well and is steadily developing her communication and language skills. Continuous encouragement helped build her confidence and love for learning.
Transformation: Today, Rajeswari is a cheerful and confident learner who actively participates in class and enjoys learning. Her steady progress enabled her to enrol in William’s School in June 2026. She now dreams of becoming a doctor, proving that timely educational support can open the door to lifelong opportunities.
