The Challenge: When Jasmin Khatun and her husband moved from West Bengal to Bengaluru in 2020, they came with hopes of building a better future for their family. Both worked hard to make ends meet. In 2022, their daughter Simran Khatun was born, bringing joy and new dreams into their lives. However, only a few months after Simran’s birth, tragedy struck when Simran’s father passed away in an accident. Suddenly left alone, Jasmin returned to her village with her infant daughter, hoping for family support. Instead, she faced emotional hardship and financial struggles.
Intervention: Determined to give her daughter a better life, Jasmin made the courageous decision to return to Bengaluru in 2026 and search for work. But as a single mother, her biggest concern was Simran’s safety and care while she worked. Living in an unsafe community environment, Jasmin desperately searched for a secure place where her daughter could stay during the day. Through neighbours, she learned about Diya Ghar and the nurturing support it provided to children from vulnerable families. She enrolled Simran at the Diya Ghar Thubrahalli centre, where the child not only received nutritious food and care, but also a safe and loving environment.
Transformation: Initially, she was extremely quiet and rarely interacted with others as it was her very first time in a learning environment. Slowly, with consistent care and encouragement from the teachers, she began participating in activities and engaging with her surroundings.
She especially enjoys Exercise for Practical Life (EPL) activities such as lacing beads and coin dropping, along with Brain Gym activities like colouring, sorting, and matching colours. Though she remains a calm and gentle child, Simran has started opening up and showing interest in learning through different activity corners.
